Program Description

The presentation will raise awareness regarding the impact that childhood and domestic violence trauma can have on an individual and ultimately impact an organization’s work environment culture. Many organizations have internal programs that address and define sexual harassment, however, there may be gaps in these programs to address external trauma impacting employees, and methods to address bystander intervention. Many times, people feel like they are not equipped to intervene and say something, even when they feel that they should. Heartly House will present practical methods to first assess for safety of self and others, and then how to ask questions or get help in potentially dangerous situations.

Speaker Bio

Doug Tinder is an accomplished corporate executive and is also a survivor of childhood sexual abuse. That part of his life was surrounded by secrecy, shame, and silence. Doug often shares a story about healing and the impact childhood trauma has on an individual’s life long after the abuse has ended and the impact on his personal and professional life.  Doug works as an advocate for other male survivors and is a Board Member of MaleSurvior.Org and Board Member of Heartly House in Frederick County, MD. In collaboration with Heartly House, Doug initiated the formation of a male survivor support group in Frederick, MD. Doug and his wife Annette in collaboration with Heartly House developed the CAPES Program, Community Awareness Promoting Empowerment for male Survivors of childhood sexual abuse to bring awareness to the impact to boys and men from childhood trauma.

Jenn Metcalf is the Community Engagement and Prevention Manager at Heartly House in Frederick, MD. She holds a B.A. in History from Winthrop University and is a credentialed Victim Advocate through the National Organization for Victim Assistance. In addition to her experience in community outreach, volunteer coordination, and prevention education, she previously worked as a medical accompaniment advocate and hotline staff, offering direct support to victims of trauma. She brings over a decade of experience in volunteer planning, public speaking, prevention education, and working with people in crisis. Jenn oversees Heartly House’s Community Engagement and Prevention Services and provides community presentations and training on power-based violence and prevention to Frederick County.
