Despite being an election year, 2024 kicked off with new federal regulations, Supreme Court case, and federal legislation. Add to that, the 444th session of the Maryland General Assembly (MGA) was no less active.


What’s next? Join this interactive and engaging session as we review advocacy opportunities to shape important public policy issues that impact HR practices, policies, and programs.

Topics will include:

• Why government policy matters and its impact on the workplace
• Learning about SHRM Government Affairs & public policy priorities
•  Pending federal legislation, practical implications/ impact, advocacy talking points
• What’s on the 2025 horizon

Learning Objectives: This is approved for SHRM Credit and Two (2) Business Credit Hours through HRCI 

At the conclusion of the program, participants will learn why government policy matters and its impact on the workplace as well as the importance of advocacy for HR and Business professionals alike. In addition, participants will be able to: (1) name and describe how at least two bills may impact HR practices at their organization (building your business case); (2) consider the same with regard to pending federal regulation; and, (3) ensure compliance with some recent employment law and regulatory developments in HR policy and practice.

SPEAKER BIOS: 

Amber Clayton

Ms. Amber Clayton is the Senior Director of Knowledge Center Operations at SHRM. She leads a team of HR experts who field an average of 60,000 HR-related inquiries from members each year. She is frequently sought after as an expert for work-related webinars, conferences and media interviews.

Amber also co-hosts a SHRM podcast called Honest HR. Amber is SHRM-certified with a Bachelor of Science from the University of Baltimore. She holds specialty credentials in California law, inclusive workplace culture, and workplace investigations. Before joining SHRM in 2011, she had years of HR experience in healthcare and retail.

Christine V. Walters

Ms. Christine V. Walters has more than 25 years’ combined experience in management, HR administration, employment law practice, and teaching. She has received national and regional awards, presented at conferences across the country, been engaged as an expert witness for the defense, and testified before U.S. Congressional and state legislative committees and administrative agencies on employment issues.

Her book, “From Hello to Goodbye: Proactive Tips for Maintaining Positive Employee Relations,” now in its second edition, has been one of the SHRMStore’s “Great 8” best-sellers for eight consecutive years and is pre-approved by HRCI for 2.5 continuing education credits!! 

Christine demonstrates her commitment to supporting and advancing the needs and interests of the business community and HR profession by serving in a variety of volunteer leadership roles at the national, state and local levels. Today she works as an independent consultant providing proactive human resources and employment law consulting services and training programs doing business as FiveL Company, “Helping Leaders Limit their Liability by Learning the Law.” SM
